Wiki Links
Most webmasters acknowledge that search engines weigh the number of "back-links" in a website as part of their algorithms for organic search results. The sense is that links from reputable websites weigh more than non-authority websites.

Links from Wikipedia are great, but very hard to come by. And even if you are able to attract a link, it is unlikely to remain in Wikipedia for any length of time. Regardless of the content quality contained in the link, the "wiki police" are vigilant, and they despise external linking and self-promotion. It is often difficult to discern the reason or motivation behind some edits that stick in Wikipedia. Hence, many webmasters feel it is a waste of time to pursue wiki links. While links in Wikipedia may be unattainable for any period of time, wiki links in general should not be ignored.

It is simply much easier to attract and retain links in smaller wikis or niche wikis. While pursing wiki links, it is important to maintain an even-keeled perspective. If you are attempting to prepare a wiki posting, consider the following:

When preparing an article for wiki posting, stick to the facts. Wiki posts are supposed to be factual, so avoid using superlatives. Wiki posts should not contain any opinions. Review other articles and their format before you begin. Adhere to standard wiki article formatting, and be sure to include links to other sections of the wiki. Spell-check the wiki article, and always preview any edits prior to publishing. A single typo can cause major formatting issues.

Track any edits. If you spend a lot of time editing and updating information on a particular page, be sure to follow the edits. Most wikis allow for edits to be tracked using either email or RSS feeds.

Be aware that many wikis tag their links as "nofollow" in order to discourage spammers. This means that many search engines will not give any value to the link in their ranking algorithm.

Finally, keep in mind that wikis are a community effort. The information contained in a wiki is collective assessments. Wikis are designed to be edited, and the chances are very good that your posts will be edited and modified over time.
