Software publishers are companies in the software
industry that operate between the software developer
and the software distributor.
Publishers will often be responsible for bringing
a product to retail, and placing it on the shelves
of brick and mortar stores.
Publishers will also often localize software,
making it available in alternate languages and
to new markets. In most cases, software publishers
will provide first level support on localized
versions.
Software publishers usually take a very large
percentage of sales, but they also invest a fair
amount in translation and packaging. Most publishers
will not sign an agreement unless they receive
50-70% off the retail price on each sale that
they generate.
Some publishers will request exclusivity. Developers
need to determine whether the publisher will really
be able to deliver the projected sales figures
before they sign away their rights. Carefully
review any publisher contracts before signing.
