Affiliates are a type of reseller that refer
customers to a website. The affiliate receives
either a flat fee for the referral or a percentage
of the sale that results from their referral.
Most software affiliate systems are designed
around the CPA model (cost per action) so that
the affiliate is only paid for referrals that
result in actual sales, as opposed to the CPC
model, which incurs a cost per click regardless
of whether there is a sale or not.
The two most common types of software affiliate
programs use wrappers to track the referrer in
the trial version, and cookies to track web based
referrals.
The affiliate model has become very popular in
the software industry and many developers can
increase their sales by implementing an affiliate
program.
