Web logs hold a treasure trove of valuable information
for webmasters. Webmasters who analyze the statistical
information contained in their logs will be able
to effectively analyze the success (or failure)
of promotional campaigns, better understand customer
behavior, and maximize their revenue.
The statistical information in web logs alone,
is really not of significant value, but the trends
viewed in the logs are helpful in determining
what is working and what is not. For this reason,
it is important that webmasters make a habit of
regularly examining their web logs. Patterns,
upward and downward trends are all important.
Important Information Contained in Web Logs Include:
Unique Visitors - Identifying the number
of unique website visitors is far more important
than the number of "hits" a website
receives. Hits are merely server requests for
an image or webpage. Each website visitor might
incur multiple "hits" in the logs, so
the relevancy of a hit is not terribly significant.
Referrers - Referrers indicate what websites
are sending traffic to your website.
Bad Requests - This indicates the number
of people that attempt to access a file, web page
or image that does not exist on your website.
This is a great way to track down
Keywords - These are the terms used by
individuals using search engines that resulted
in them clicking on your listing in the search
engine results.
Length of Time - How long a web visitor
remains on a specific web page.
Entry / Exit Page Statistics - These are
the pages through which a visitor enters your
website and leaves your website.
Search Engine Referrers - These are the
search engines that sent traffic to your website.
Referring Urls - The exact URL's that
sent traffic to your website. The referring urls
are specific web pages that link to your website
and send traffic.
Web logs can provide webmasters a lot of information.
You just know what to look for and why the statistics
are important. Based on the information contained
in the web logs you can make decisions about marketing
and promotion.
