Title Tag Tips Title Tag Tips

One of the most important factors in Search Engine Optimization is the webpage title. The webpage title is contained in the "meta tags" located in the header of the webpage code. Not only do search engines often use the webpage title when listing the page in their results, but the title is also a factor that search engines heavily weigh when determining how a webpage will rank in the organic search results.

So here are a few tips for taking better advantage of the webpage title tags...

1. Exact Phrase
Use the exact phrase that you are optimizing for in the webpage title.

2. Beginning Of Tag
Position the strongest keyword or keyword phrase at the very beginning of the title tag. Search engines place the most emphasis on the first few words found in the title, so the order of the words does make a difference.

3. 65 Character Max
Keep website titles concise. Search engines will often truncate the title in their listings. Try not to allow the title to exceed 65 characters if possible.

4. Repeat Variation
Repeat a variation of the keyword or keyword phrase in the webpage title and in the webpage meta description.

5. Brand At End
If you have a compelling desire to include the product brand in the webpage's title, include it at the end of the title and not at the beginning. It is typically very easy to rank well for a company name or brand, so brand should not be emphasized in the title itself.

6. Grab Attention
The website title needs to attract attention. This will increase the number of clicks that the listing receives from the search engine results. Titles that focus on how to's, humor, and controversy all tend to attract attention.

7. Analysis
If you are having difficulty coming up with ideas for a title, take a look at the site titles that hit the first page of popular social bookmarking sites like Digg. Analyze the titles that make the first page of Google for important searches.

Every page on a website should contain a different and unique title tag. Selecting the right title can significantly impact click-through rates.
