Real in-person networking, as opposed to virtual
social networking, can still help build a business.
Today's business people have demanding schedules
and limited time, so it can be a difficult balancing
act between home and work. Business people may
cringe at the thought of expanding their social
circle to allow for social networking, but according
to recent statistics, social networking is one
of the best ways to grow a business and improve
its reputation. By consistently widening their
circles of acquaintances and contacts, business
people are able to reach a much broader audience.
The key to effective networking is to use time
wisely, and here are some tips to help improve
your networking skills...
1. Listen
Show that you are genuinely interested in what
the person you are speaking to is saying (even
if you are not).
2. Participate
Networking is all about participating. Actively
participate in discussions and conversations,
and exchange business cards whenever possible.
3. Be Prepared
When networking in a social situation, try to
have materials available. If an individual expresses
an interest, give them a business card, or follow
up with promotional materials or an email containing
a website URL with more information. Do not miss
an opportunity because you were unprepared. Be
sure to provide interested parties the additional
information or resources they request, so they
can learn more about your product or service.
4. Refer/Recommend
If a colleague asks for a recommendation, be
candid in your referrals. If you have experience,
qualify your recommendation.
5. Introductions
When possible, facilitate introductions between
colleagues or business associates. Networking
associates together will endear you to them.
6. Follow Through
If you say you are going to do something, be
sure that you do. Building a solid reputation
is critical in social networking.
7. Remain Professional
Your actions reflect on all aspects of how others
perceive you. If you are in a social setting and
behave in an inappropriate manner, that could
have a significant negative impact your business.
If you are interested in social networking as
a tool to grow your business, you must always
act in a professional manner.
Networking can help expand and improve your business,
so extend your reach even further by the use of
effective networking.
