Software on a CD Cover How to Promote Software on a CD Cover

After sending a software press release developers are often contacted by magazines, asking to include their software on a magazine CD cover. CD ROMs included with computer magazines are very popular, especially in Europe. This is a great opportunity for software developers to gain additional exposure at very little expense.

The editor might propose including a specific version of the software or give the software developer a number of different options for including software on the CD cover.

Options Typically Include:

1. Include a Free Old Version
Many editors will include a fully registered older version of software, on the CD Cover. The primary advantage to providing older versions free of charge is that developers will gain market share and have the potential to profit from upgrades.

2. Include an Evaluation Version
Some editors will request an evaluation version be included on the magazine CD cover. If a you offer a current evaluation version you may want to also consider offering the magazine a coupon code for a discount on a registered version. Magazine's will often include the discount code in text to their readers, giving the software additional exposure.

3. Include a Current Registered Version
In order to gain marketshare, developers will sometimes provide magazines a full registered version of their software to include on the magazines CD cover. Developers might also do this as a way to promote a "pro" or advanced version of their software.

Create a Press Page
In order to get the most from your CD cover, create a press section on your website that includes graphics and product descriptions. You should create a standard webpage that contains permissions for the press to include evaluation versions on a cover CD or if simply provide details on how to be contacted to obtain permission.
