Software developers will occasionally receive
phone calls or emails requesting press interviews.
Preparation is very important and can mean the
difference between a good interview and a bad
interview. Occasionally, the interview requests
will follow the sending of a press release. Sometimes
the reporter will be researching a subject and
believe you to be a qualified expert. The interviewer
may request an interview and request quotes for
a piece they are writing. The reporter may just
be interested in better understanding a specific
subject.
Sometimes podcasters will request an interview
thinking your knowledge would be of interest to
their listeners.
Regardless of what type of media the press is
representing it is important that you are properly
prepared for any interviews.
1. Scope
Ask the interviewer the scope and format of the
interview. If it is an audio interview, the interviewer
may even be willing to provide written questions
prior to the interview.
2. Length
Ask the interviewer the approximate expected length
of the interview. There is a big difference between
a 10 minute interview and one that is an hour
long.
3. Hardware
Check to see if you require any special hardware
or conferencing software in order to participate
in the interview. Make sure you check any system
requirements for proprietary software that needs
to be installed.
4. Key Talking Points
When you have an idea of the interview's subject
matter jot down some notes about the topic. Create
a list of talking points or notes to assist you
through the interviewing process. This will help
you direct the conversation and help make sure
that you cover all the points you want to cover.
5. Mock Interviews
Practice makes perfect; it might sound silly,
but role playing an interview and practicing will
help ease your nerves before the real deal.
6. Do Your Homework
Research the interview subject material to fill
in any gaps in your knowledge. Do an Internet
search and make sure you are current on related
industry news so that you will not be caught off
guard with any questions.
7. Dress Appropriately
If the interview is an in person or on camera
interview be sure to dress appropriately.
8. Listen or Watch
If available listen to or watch previous interviews
by the reporter to get a better idea of what types
of questions will be asked. Listening to previous
interviews will also provide insight and give
a better understanding to the show's format.
9. Anticipate
Listening to previous interviews may also give
insight into predictable follow up questions.
This will help you anticipate and prepare for
follow up questions that might occur during your
interview.
10. Test
If you require conferencing software, be sure
to test it prior to the interview. Test your microphone
or headset and make sure that it sounds clear
and that sounds are not distorted.
Taking the time to properly prepare for an interview
can make a world of difference.
