There are number of reasons software developers will benefit from active software organization participation.

1. Networking
Organization members typically have a common interest. Active participation in a software organization is a great way to network. Sometimes these relationships can be the beginning of great strategic partnerships.

Developers can learn from the experience (both positive and negative) of other developers. Sharing experiences will often help everyone.

Long term industry participation results in a network of resources for developers to draw upon, should their situation change.

Many software organizations provide educational resources that are only accessible to their membership.

The bottom line is that there are a number of benefits to participating in a software organization or association. Ultimately though most developers will tell you that you get out what you put in. In other words, joining is not enough. You must actively engage in events and participate in discussions to benefit from association membership.
