I am a software developer and interested in marketing an application I wrote for personal use. What do I do?
First off, good for you! Some of the best applications are those that fill a real world need that people had. That said, programs that are often written for personal or internal corporate use often lack the polish needed to make the application truly successful. In other words while functional they are not necessarily pretty. In addition do not jump to the conclusion that because it works in your environment and on your system that it will run on all systems in all environments. The best thing to do is to solicit alpha testers, you may want to start with family and friends. Have them go the install process and quietly watch, try not to be overly sensitive to any criticism that you receive. Think of any critiques as opportunities to improve your software. After you know the functionality is solid, it is time to pretty it up, add icons, and work on the documentation. Once you have what you consider a product ready to market open the software to beta testing.
After thorough beta testing is complete its time to launch your software.
